Jason Paul Johnston in the Studio
July 2007
Jason Paul Johnston is back in the studio writing and recording his second full length CD. Jason descends from the songwriting lineage of groups like Radiohead, U2 and Coldplay but has been deeply influenced by his southern gospel roots and current alt-country stylings of Wilco, Ryan Adams and Calexico.
"I've been listening to a lot of bluegrass lately - getting back to my roots," Jason comments. "I can't deny that it's the year 2007, and music has evolved, but at the same time there is an authentic earthiness to this old time country music that just resonates. I think it's the combination of the underlying gospel themes and the deep sadness, I feel at home somewhere between the two."
Some people might call this blend alt-country, americana, insurgent, or cow-punk - whatever it is, he's not your average
singer-songwriter. And inside sources tell us it's the not the kind of music you'll want
to miss.
"I've been reading about a lot of artists who say after 15 albums, 'this is the CD I've always wanted to make, but before I was too driven by market success.' With this, my first full length CD, I want to face my fears of not 'making it' and create something that I will be proud of when I grow old."
Jason is currently in pre production, at his home in Mississauga, Ontario, Canada and he is putting the final touches on the songs themselves. Look for the new album out the Fall of 2007.
